I regret that I should have been to big names such as Miles Davis and James Brown who have come to Japan.
But I could see Chuck Berry on August 11, 1989.
Chuck Berry was treated as a special guest at the event, where hard rock guitarists such as Jeff Beck, Steve Lukather, and Neal Schon were the main characters.
I remember clearly when I went to Yokohama with my long-haired childhood friend, and posted at the entrance, “Please note that we may not play due to Chuck Berry’s own circumstances, so please forgive me in advance.”
I wondered why I came all the way, but when I finished listening to the powerful performance of Jeff Beck Group and tried to leave my seat, it was announced that Chuck Berry would perform.
Chuck Berry just came out to the stage without any sound effects or lighting effects.
He played only a few representative songs, but after seeing the famous Duck Walk, I thought I could see the living legend of rock and roll.
It may be a mistake in my memory, but at the end there was a unique happening.
I think he suddenly pulled the shield out of the PA without squeezing the volume of his guitar and left the stage.
The strange noise “Whack!” and the staff at the control booth seemed angry.
Thinking back now, I think it was a Chuck Berry experience.
See you soon.
