January 17th is remembered by people as the day when the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake occurred in Japan. In the early morning of this day in 1995, a great earthquake struck people.
Fortunately, there was no direct damage because the epicenter is about 570km away from the prefecture where I live. A few days after the quake, I wanted to volunteer in the disaster area.
It was only about a week after I actually entered Kobe, but I can’t forget the miserable sight of Nagata Ward, which was hit by a wide range of fires, and the collapsed Meriken Wharf.
I strongly remember that I ran under the Kashiwai Building, which was about to collapse, and delivered drinking water to the artificial landfill island while struggling with the liquefied mud.
In the news this morning, I saw a memorial service in Kobe. The pain of those who have lost their families and acquaintances has not been weathered.
Twenty-six years after that, I prayed for the souls of the 6,434 people who died, and once again felt that I should not forget my memories and experiences.
See you soon.
